Bentley Mulsanne Key Celebrates Its Centenary

Bentley's custom coachbuilding division, Mulliner, has designed an exclusive key case to celebrate the brand's centenary. It is made of Dark Stained Burr Walnut and Piano Black veneer, it includes a flying 'B' paperweight, a set keys and a brochure that features never-before-seen 1930 8 Litre images.

It's the perfect gift to introduce a new owner to their luxurious vehicle.

Aesthetics

As a design-centric company Bentley takes its aesthetics seriously. It's evident in the exact positioning of its quilting, the selection of leather from cattle by-products, the wood that comes from sustainably managed forests and the creative patterns on its levers. A car like the Continental GT W12 beckons as you take it in, displaying its sculptural beauty and power through carefully planned lighting.

The Continental GT is Bentley's most sophisticated open-top vehicle. The rear tonneau, for instance, displayed the largest piece of dark-stained, book-matched Burr Walnut veneer ever applied to an actual production Bentley. Similarly, the electrically-operated glass sunroof and champagne cooler that incorporated hand-blown and hand-cut lead crystal bottles marked a new benchmark in luxury and innovation.

It is this unique design, craftsmanship and attention to detail that have established Bentley as the world's most desirable automotive brand. The company continues to push boundaries by utilizing the most advanced technology and workmanship, such as the introduction of a digital instrument cluster, an electric tilt-opening rear glass sunroof, a custom-designed docking station for Apple iPads and electrochromic 'smart' glass that can be switched from transparent to opaque by pressing a button.

A century after its founding, Bentley - now under sole Volkswagen ownership after years of fighting with BMW was able to celebrate its centennial in the year 2019. Before the pandemic planning took the center stage, the company had a number of special events and launches planned to celebrate this significant occasion.

Design

Bentley is a luxury car manufacturer that creates extravagant and luxurious cars. However, even keys stand out. The Bentayga Key is constructed of sterling silver and features the large B' logo to let everyone know that you're driving a Bentley. The key is also decorated with the years 1919 and 2019, to mark the company’s centenary.

The Mulsanne was redesigned and improved by Bentley Mulliner to become the ultimate Grand Touring car. The rear seats were designed to provide passengers with unparalleled comfort and privacy. They were inspired by the luxurious private aircraft. The bespoke heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system was developed to give every passenger the perfect climate control setting.

The Mulsanne has a twin turbocharged 6.75 litre W12 engine that puts out 560bhp and 479lb-ft torque. This incredible power is complemented by a new suspension system which provides Bentley's renowned smooth ride.

In celebration of its Centenary, Bentley introduced a custom-designed specification called the Centenary Specification for cars that were built in 2019. The cabin is decorated with cross-stitching as well as contrast stitching in Centenary Gold throughout. The Keylab on the headrests and seats are embossed in Centenary Gold, adding to the sense of celebration. The Centenary Specification also includes a bespoke Bentley keycase, completing the Bentley experience.

Function

The Bentley Mulsanne Key has two buttons: one that opens the trunk, and another which starts the vehicle. The key also has a button to turn on the parking brake. The knob can be used to fold or unfold the mirrors when parking in a tight space. This feature helps you get in and out of your car.

Each key takes about two days to make. The key is cut by hand, shaped, stitched, sealed, and then polished to achieve a high-quality result. It is strong compact and fits the Bentley key perfectly. Its design is akin to the Volkswagen Phaeton large car's key however, it feels heavier and has a luxurious feel.

Secure-A-Key is also included to protect against keyless entry theft. This device is inserted inside the remote-control key fob. It will shut it off after a few minutes of inactivity, preventing thieves from transmitting the frequency of the key to other devices which can unlock and start the vehicle.

Bentley's distinctive design reflects the company's values that include high-quality craftsmanship engineering expertise, as well as the latest technologies. Over 4,000 people work at its Crewe headquarters, where they are responsible for the development, design, and production of Bentley cars. They employ skills that have been handed through generations and apply them to the latest in automotive technology. This is British manufacturing at its best.

Personalisation

Bentley's Mulliner division lets customers create their own car. The guests sit at a collection of images, referred to "mood stations" and choose a selection of photos ranging from picturesque views to sporting events that will inspire them. When each selection is made, a pattern will emerge, which reveals the model and color preferences for the personalized Bentley.

The resulting configuration is saved to individual R.F.I.D.-enabled key cards which are handed out to guests in a hand-crafted key case. Keys can be adorned with Bentley Muliner Personalised welcome lamps that illuminate the path of the opening door with the owner's logo or name as they approach the vehicle.

Bentley says it takes roughly 500 man-hours in order to create and put together the typical Mulsanne. The inability to adopt modern technology is the main factor to this lengthy and laborious process. The Crewe factory workers do not use a machine to space perfectly-matched leather seats. Instead they do it by hand. Drivers must park their cars manually, rather than relying on the built-in sensors to guide them into parallel and perpendicular spots.

Bentley displayed its Mulliner personalization capabilities in the release of a special Mulsanne W.O. Edition, that pays homage to the William Osler, the founder of Bentley. Edition, which pays tribute to founder William Osler Bentley. The limited-edition cars come with one key that features a portion of the 1930 8 Liter's crankshaft.
