How to Fix a Key Fob That isn't Working

Battery

It is fairly easy to replace batteries, but it is essential to ensure that you select the correct one and you can consult your owner's manual or contact the manufacturer's dealer to determine the type of battery you require. It is also crucial to examine the battery compartment as dead batteries can leak toxic chemicals that could damage the remote. If replacing the battery does not fix the issue, there may be other issues that require professional attention. For example, if buttons seem to be stuck or damaged it could be necessary to disassemble the remote and rework its parts. You could also try reprogramming your vehicle to recognize the new key fob.

Buttons

Key fobs may become filthy and worn out due to frequent use. This is not atypical however it can cause buttons to cease working or require a very hard press for them to function. This can be extremely frustrating especially if you're out of town and need to start your vehicle. Fortunately, even worn out or damaged buttons can be fixed with just a bit of time and a few materials you might already have in the house.

First, make sure that the batteries are correctly inserted and that the indentation at the back of the button has been filled. Then, open the remote with care and examine the circuit board. Check for signs of corrosion or other signs that the buttons are worn out or damaged, like missing the conductive paint. Use a Q-tip, dipped in alcohol to gently clean any membrane contact that has become worn-out or where conductive painting is missing. Avoid rubbing too hard as this can erode the conductive painting and prevent the button firing when pressed.

Also, make sure to inspect the battery connector terminals for a loose solder connection. If this is the case, connecting them back could restore function to the button. The same procedure can be used to restore function to any other loose connections within the fob.

If any of the rubber buttons on the front of the keyfob aren't working or need to be press very hard the graphite disks on the back of the button could have worn out and require replacement. This is usually done by rubbing a pencil on the disks. This should bring the button back to life.
