How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated at the top of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is situated on the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors accordingly.
If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of a chain stretch or a jump in the chain link of the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).
It can be a bit difficult to test since there are several pins on the connector and they all have different functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read about 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation. If you're experiencing issues with this component, look for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at full speed, i noticed a huge reduction in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, 3 were drenched in gazoline, the fourth was dry. When I crank the engine with no sparks, i place a tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline leap out, however the 4th stays closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. audi replacement key got zero ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is in another place.
I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it is running fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.
I'm not sure what to do, i believe that i've completely ruled out all other possibilities. I'm afraid i may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please let me know! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump of the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find an extra in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is simple to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that needs to know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about fuel injector timing etc. In order to do this it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these goes badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that can lead to engine shutdown.
A malfunctioning G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox and a gearbox which shifts faster than normal, or a misfire in gear. It is possible that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you encounter any of these signs. The good news is that they are very cheap and easy to find particularly when you're looking at the Bosch model, which is what ours are. Alternatively, the GM version of this unit is also a great option.
5. Tachometer
A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a number of problems in your vehicle. It's an essential component of the Audi's transmission as it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's crankshaft is rotating. If the sensor fails, it could disrupt the performance of the transmission, as well as the rest of the car's components.
The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU then processes this signal to control fuel, timig, and boost as well as transmitting it to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for failure by checking continuity between it and the tachometer. You can also check continuity between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection on pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should observe around 1000 ohms of resistance between those two pins. This is a common feature across the Audi 80-100-200-RS2 range, beginning with the 1985 MC and up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 Du You may also find them in wrecking yards.
