How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jumped chain link in the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It's a bit tricky to test since there are various pins on the connector, and they all have different functions. The best method for doing this is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when it is at full operation. Check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a significant drop in power. spare audi key was like the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, 3 were soaked with gazoline and the fourth one was dry. When I crank the engine, there are no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th stay shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got zero ohm. I think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it runs fine with the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do. I think I've all other possibilities out. But i am afraid I may have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. Test them out - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's end). They should be infinite ohms.


4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines requires to know both the position and speed the crankshaft to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you encounter a problem with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could cause an engine shut down.

Some of the symptoms of a failed G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or a misfire when you are in gear. It is possible that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you experience any of these symptoms. The good thing is that they are very affordable and readily available particularly when you're looking at a Bosch unit which is what ours are. Alternately, the GM version of this unit is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a number of problems in your vehicle. It's a crucial component of the transmission of your Audi since it sends information to the ECU on how fast or slowly the car's engine is spinning. If the sensor fails, it could affect the performance of the transmission, as well as the other car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear and transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU then processes this signal to regulate fuel, timig and boost as well as sends it on to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. You can also examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should detect an average resistance of 1000 ohms between these two points. This part is common across the Audi 80-100-200-RS2 model, ranging from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 DU So, you may find some good ones in wrecking yards.
