The rest of the digits have been transliterated into numbers. For example the first digit receives eight, the next digits increase by one until it reaches nine at the seventh digit. Then, it changes to two. Then, the whole VIN is translated back into its original form by multiplying the weight of each digit by 11. If the result is equivalent to the check digit then the VIN is valid.
