We asked Ladina Schopf - an interior designer, architect and the founder of LS Projects - for her advice on how to choose the right one. They evaluated storage capacity, layout and energy efficiency, among other features.

GE Profile Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

As the name suggests, GE's Profile series targets the consumer who wants to incorporate cutting-edge technology into their kitchen. This refrigerator is packed with these, from an inside-the-door Keurig K-cup coffee maker to a sophisticated water dispenser. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. Since this refrigerator is a premium, I expect better.

This fridge is a good choice, despite the blip. It has a large freezer compartment which is uncommon for counter-depth French-door fridges. It also holds plenty of frozen food, which is a big difference from other models.

Inside the fridge, there are 17 shelves and compartments. The fridge compartment is 18.5 cubic feet of space, which is on par for a French door fridge costing this much. It has a decent sized freezer in the left side. But, it's not the largest one I've seen.

You can alter the shelves in both compartments to create customized storage arrangement for whatever you have to keep. The interior design of the GE PYE22PYNFS is attractive. The LED lighting is a nice touch. The storage bins in the door have a third shelf which can be folded down to store tall items. The drawers have temperature controls that let you set them to Meat, Beverage, or Deli settings. They're easy to open and close, but I found their plastic textured coatings to be a little hard on the fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator is equipped with a complete set of features you'd expect from a fridge at this price, including Wi-Fi and app support via GE's SmartHQ software. The app is compatible with iOS and Android devices and lets you manage your refrigerator from anywhere around the world. It also offers many options for customization. It also sends you notifications when the door is unlocked, when the freezer or fridge requires defrosting, and when the filter requires a change.

It would be nice if the GE PYE22PYNFS had Precise Fill, an option available in other GE fridges that allows you to preset how many cups of water you'd like to disperse at a time. It does have a countdown on the fridge's display to display how much water have left, but it's not as helpful as Precise Fill.

Bosch Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The Bosch French-door Refrigerator is an impressive product. It's designed to look like a seamless piece of your kitchen. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. It also comes with a veggie compartment that keeps vegetables and fruits fresher for longer, and two compressors to ensure the best food preservation. The Ice maker is among the best we've ever tested, and it produces a pyramid-shaped form of Ice with low use of water. This refrigerator is the ideal choice for single household or kitchenettes who want a sleek design and top-of-the-line food preservation.

The fridge was rated the best refrigerator in our Refrigerators test, for various reasons. The temperature of the freezer remained stable at a level that was just above 0 degrees Fahrenheit, never fluctuating by more than a fraction one degree. This is crucial to avoiding freezer burn. The fridge's fridge section also performed well, reaching the desired initial set temperature within an hour and keeping that temperature steady over the course of our tests.


Bosch has a reputation for high-end appliances which is why it's no surprise that this counter-depth refrigerator is also a smart appliance with the option to connect to your home Wi-Fi network and Bosch's Home Connect platform. The app allows you to control and monitor your refrigerator remotely on your smartphone or tablet. The fridge is a bit expensive, however it has excellent features and functionality for the cost.

While the fridge is an incredible appliance but it's important to be aware of the limitations. It has a narrow space for shelves, so you'll need to be creative when storing tall objects. Additionally, the shelves are not completely sprillproof, and can easily be stained or damaged by sharp objects. The trays can be easily removed from the refrigerator. However, they must be cleaned frequently to stop the growth of mold.

LG Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The LG LRFLC2706S is a great counter-depth refrigerator that packs a lot of storage space into the frame's compact size. Its capacity is superior for a counter-depth model and it cools evenly and has a great layout. It's also a little cheaper than the top counter-depth refrigerator that has an ice maker, which helps make it an attractive option.

Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

This Frigidaire French door refrigerator is a good choice when you're looking for a French door fridge that won't break the budget. It's a minimalist design that's not as visually striking like some of the competitors but it does have enough features that make it a great choice. Its most important feature, the temperature adjustable drawer, helps to keep food items like meat and vegetables fresher for longer. It also has a large ice maker and a water dispenser.

The "Chill Drawer", which is located above the two crisper bins, is a nice feature. The drawer lets you redirect the majority of the fridge's cooling power to this area so that you can store foods which need extra attention. This feature can be adjusted by using a slider on the outside of the drawer. You can also set the general cooling settings for the entire fridge. I have found that the general settings are more effective than the specific ones.

During my tests, the refrigerator's temperatures were fairly constant across the different areas of the fridge. The temperatures in the top and bottom of the fridge didn't vary very far from 38 degrees, and the middle of the fridge was within one degree of 36. This is a pretty good performance however it doesn't make it into the top ten in our rankings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. The fridge can be linked with a smart thermostat to get more accurate readings on the internal temperature of your fridge.

The exterior of the Frigidaire is made from grey-bodied stainless with a "smudge resistant" finish. It repels fingerprints and streaks better than other stainless steel finishes I've tried.
